While grout remains on the top of the tile because it is a binding agent, joint sand exists to keep the space between pavers locked together. This prevents the pavers from loosening, and helps stop any issues that may arise from loose pavers. Subsequently, joint sand will wash away on the top over time, inevitably. Joint sand in the cracks between pavers will remain for much time, however. Keeping joint sand visible requires constant management and for many customers is not worth it in the long haul.
